Richard Wilbur on Vita Nova

"Tim, please send me an address where I can send Mr. Frisardi an appreciative note card."

"I think this is a job that has long needed doing. Maybe it needed to be done by a young man."

"I want to thank you for introducing this youngster's translations of the youthful Dante at the Eratosphere."

So measure the coffin, Andrew, it doesn't get any better than that.

Big words from the big man -- congrats, Andrew.

Hey, Andrew, much-deserved praise from a master.

I've been thinking a lot about Richard recently, and awaiting any word. I always hope that when I post a poem here he might be a silent reader. It has made me work harder. Much harder.

Dana Gioia, who is a masterful translator of verse, once told me that Wilbur should publish all his verse translations in a single volume entitled Look on my Works, Ye Mighty, and Despair.

On one of Dick's infrequent forays here (he doesn't use computers) I asked him to look at a Clive Watkins major poem and one of Andrew's first attempts at translating the young Dante. He shared my enthusiasm, and he obviously shares my enthusiasm for Andrew's finished text.

Congratulations, Andrew.

oh my! gasp gasp! wtg, A!

Of course Wilbur likes Andrew's work. Andrew's the real deal, fluent speaker, scholar, poet, and Wilbur can tell. The real question here is, when are we going to get your Divine Comedy?

Chris

Well, “youngster” is pushing it but Richard Wilbur’s response to my book is a real thrill. Thanks for posting it, Tim, and thanks to David, Janice, Seree, and Chris for the thumbs up. Tim, I’m PM’ing you on the address.

As for translating the Divine Comedy, I’ve already translated quite a bit of it, only problem is, it’s all in prose. Now, if only I could make it sound good . . .

Andrew, you will get a note card. Dick was born in 1921, so everyone to him is a youngster.

Congratulations, Andrew. On being a young man, for one thing, and, of course, gaining such a distinguished fan.
