My day job has nothing to do with poetry. I do computer work at an institute of about 600 people.

For Christmas this past year, I wrote new words to "The Wassail Song" , featuring references to charge numbers, auditors, and reorganizations. A small group of us sang it at the office holiday party, and as we carolled through the halls.

Today, at the quarterly All Hands' Meeting, the director (who was delighted by the piece, and even sang it with us once) included my complete text, 3 verses plus refrain, as part of his PowerPoint presentation to the staff. He credited me with the text, and jokingly declared that I had earned the first ever "morale award".

So now, I am "famous" among my coworkers, and have earned good juju with the director to boot. I am delighted and amused, and thought I'd brag here. http://www.ablemuse.com/erato/ubbhtml/smile.gif

Dear Victoria,

First, let me say congratulations! Way to go! I'm always pleased to hear how a person - particularly in his or her workplace - gets recognized for their lively spirit as well as creativity with words.

Thanks for bragging this way ...

Happy New Year, Don

Congratulations, Victoria! And you too, don, for the recent acceptances to "Iambs & Trochees," and where else? This is not bragging--this is spreading the joy! But I wonder, Victoria, if there really is anything in human life that "has nothing to do with poetry."

Thank you Rhina for encouraging me to brag ...eh,uh, to 'spread the joy'! This has been a banner month for me.
First, I got a blank verse poem about my late father accepted at The Lyric; and this acceptance came the day after Christmas, with a warm hand-written note from the editor, Jean Mellichamp Milliken! (Needless to say,I am pleased to have my father remembered in this way, in verse, and by the likes of this journal!) Then, just a few days ago, I got two more poems accepted in Iambs & Trochees -
a quatrain, in iambic tetrameter, and a triolet. So, right now, I am feeling pretty puffed up with some old fashioned pride and joy. And I owe you, Rhina, a great debt of gratitude for all the time and effort you've given me, in your critiques as well as your encouragement to send my father's poem back to Jean.

Victoria, very cool, congratulations! Won't you let us see your Wassail Song? It sounds funny.

Don, may your banner month continue—kudos!

Thank you all! http://www.ablemuse.com/erato/ubbhtml/smile.gif

And Don, wow! Congratulations!! Those are -real- accomplishments.

Terese, gee, twist my arm... oh all right... http://www.ablemuse.com/erato/ubbhtml/wink.gif Here are the words. There are two bits of local knowledge necessary: a WBS is a charge number (Work Breakdown Structure, I -think-), and Lot U is the overflow parking lot that's slated to become a construction site for a new building in a few weeks.

The WBS Song

Here we come, a WBS-ing,
along the corridors,
Here we come a wandering,
in fear of auditors....

love and joy come to you
(and fill out your time card too!)
and god bless you and send you
a happy new year,
and god send you a happy new year

we are not merely strangers
who wandered in your door
we are your matrixed colleagues
that you've not met before...

love and joy come to you
(and fill out your time card too!)
and god bless you and send you
a happy new year,
and god send you a happy new year

Oh we have been reorganized --
our managers have too,
but we are dreading next year
when we will lose lot U!

love and joy come to you
(and fill out your time card too!)
and god bless you and send you
a happy new year,
and god send you a happy new year

Lol, Victoria, your song is great! You may think it "tiny and amusing", but to bring laughter to others, especially nowadays, is giving them a wonderful gift!

Patti
