Cornel West about Charlottesville

Here is an interview with Cornel West. I post it because it isn't often that anarchists get the credit they deserve on the news.

Cornel West shows up a fair bit as a talking head when he isn't doing campaign ads for Jill Stein. He is never without an opinion.

Which is of course an opinion.

Orwn Acra 08-15-2017 02:16 AM

What happened in Charlottesville is something about which one should have an opinion.

John Isbell 08-15-2017 02:54 AM

Very true. But, since you raise the question, grandstanding makes me uncomfortable, and that's what I have heard in West since I first heard him on TV. Nor is he a person who lacks a platform for his point of view.
And that is my little platform.

Here's a short documentary by HBO on the Charlottesville protest and ensuing violence with incredible journalistic access to the extremists and their intentions. The woman journalist did an amazing job.

If you have trouble accessing it search youtube for "Charlottesville: Race and Terror".

John, if the person whose behavior bothers you in this instance is Cornel West, you might want to re-examine your priorities.

John Isbell 08-16-2017 12:16 AM

Good evening Quincy,

Porque no los dos?

My extreme objection to Donald Trump and to the white supremacists he has unleashed on the nation - since, for the record, I object to them - do not, I hope, preclude me objecting to how Cornel West uses his soapbox.
Which I think is a point worth making.

Cheers,
John

Update: let me add, since moral equivalency is in the air, that I see no equivalency between the two. But that fact doesn't oblige me to admire the thinker Cornel West or agree with his use of language. Or let me say, of his obvious gifts.

Emitt Evan Baker 08-16-2017 06:22 AM

So some fellow you don't always agree with put his body where his mouth is and stood unarmed in front of Vanilla ISIS and you felt the need to point out some vague problem you have with his presence in the media. The point of the short clip was about the nature of actual physical resistance and the importance of forceful presence from here on out at any event in the public sphere where this slime starts to coalesce. If we can count on you for that, then maybe start there with your announcement and move onto the sublties of your problems with Mr. West at a less ambiguous moment.

John Isbell 08-16-2017 07:03 AM

Yes, that I think is well put, Emitt, and a valuable point about argument. My concern as to how Cornel West constructs an argument on TV is what it is, but I will admire him for showing up in person to oppose what's happening in America today. It's certainly more than I've done thus far.

Cheers,
John
