Willis Barnstone at Chronicle of Higher Education

Oh Tony who cares a shit about the Chronicle. I got their honored last page about a decade ago, but I regard it as a left wing rag beneath contempt. I honor your wishing to honor your dad, but I think you are a far better poet than he.

Tony,
Thanks for linking to this. I'm enjoying your father's memoir of his time with Borges in Buenos Aires. In 1990, when I was 17 years old, I bought and read the complete works of Borges––I believe this is the reason I became a mathematician: it is against Borges' advice that I now try to write. I'm enjoying the memoir, and I've really enjoyed your and your father's translations of Borges. I did have some comments on some statements you've made on meter in the Spanish originals, but I've failed to compose anything. Once the semester is over, I hope to find time to send something your way. Cheers, Pedro. |
Tony thanks so much for posting this. I am one of many who admires and respects your father for his scholarship and literary production and not least his many services to translation. A portal figure for all who are interested in the art of translation and who even has made a whistle stop at the Sphere.
I'll probably never have all seventy of his books but I do have and enjoy The Poetics of Translation: History, Theory, Practice" and the (co-edited with your mom, I believe) "A Book of Women Poets" (which for the uninformed consists of translations of women poets from antiquity to now). This sounds like an must-read, must-have history vital to the understanding of the poetry of our era. Thank you for sharing. |
Nice tribute, Tony. When WB was a DG here for a translation event a couple years ago I was lucky to come out less scathed than most -- a proud moment for me. The Wang Wei book you and he did is still one of my most thumb-worn volumes. And don't mind Tim, he likes beneath-contempt rags to be right-wing.

"And don't mind Tim, he likes beneath-contempt rags to be right-wing."
Another utterly graceless gesture by Tim. Back to the confessional Mr. Murphy. Ways of Ecstasy sounds fascinating. Nemo |
