BigCityLit has published my review of the Fred Morgan Panel at West Chester Poetry Conference, and it's already up. That website is lightning-fast! It's at:

Congratulations!

But is it truly in the spirit of criticism that you couldn't take a single cheap shot at anyone?

No kidding, nice going!

Nice piece--except that it made me sad I missed the fun this year!

Roger. That was the main reason I chose to write about this panel: there was much to think about, much to admire, nothing to whinge about. You should have come and heard Morgan read, and I think you'd understand. I never even mentioned it was his 80th Birthday Party as well, and there was a big cake. So in a way, the cheap shot was not mentioning the birthday! But your remark was impish, and thanks.

Michael. Thanks, and wish you'd been there too. I hope you and the other Erato moderators make it next year. The last night of the conference, we made up an Erato table for dinner, and it was so crowded that Lisa Barnett, whose idea the table was in the first place, and others couldn't quite squeeze in. So we had a table and a half. Wish some of the Gaz could have been there too.

Roger

I should have added this: the precise title of the panel was "The Achievements of Frederick Morgan."

Considering all that he achieved in 50 years as the founding editor of Hudson Review, I don't think the wildest cynic could have dreamed up a "cheap shot" about his lifework. Aside from the fact that I have no respect for the average cheap shot; I don't think you indulge in them either, however you may joke about them. At least I haven't noticed.

As for his poems, I gave a rave because I experienced a rave!

Terese, I would've agreed and said that no one could take a cheap shot. I missed the achievement part (though I was there for the reading), but I did see someone charging out of there talking about it being the biggest load of shit or something along those lines. Go figure.

I've received this additional information from The Hudson Review:

Sydney Lea did not work for The Hudson Review, but was a founding editor of The New England Review. The accurate details in the Lea anecdote occurred when Mr. Morgan was giving him and his partners advice on starting The New England Review.
