When Richard Siken visited the university where I teach, he mentioned that Louise Glück, after choosing his manuscript for the Yale Younger Poets Award, went through it and advised him to remove all the humor in it. He did. Have you ever felt that your humor was standing in the way of certain kinds of recognition as a "serious poet"? What do you think is the status of humor in the poetry world at the moment? Do some kinds of humor play better than others?
