Terese--

That quote, taken out of context, was more than a bit tongue-in-cheek, and your post, being both intended as character assassination and more than a bit off-topic unless I am the topic, constitutes an ad hominem argument that I would suggest removing sooner rather than later.

Quincy

I am beginning to feel the fresh air from Rhina's post wafting over here:

And thanks, Ned.

Friends, let's talk, not accuse or bully each other.

Holy smokes, Terese. Talk about coming out of left field! That was awfully random. I know passions get stirred, but it may be time for yet another appeal for calm, and for measured speech.

Best,

Bill

And just to note, I suspect neither Mike Peich nor Dana Gioia of any wrongdoing, and I think the decision to cancel the 2015 conference, though sad, was probably the only possible course of action under the circumstances.

Can I make that any more categorical?

The Inquirer story is here: http://www.philly.com/philly/education/20140921_West_Chester_U__cancels_poetry_conference __reassigns_director.html

Whatever the issues involved, the University has not exactly covered itself in glory in its communications on the issue.

Bill,

As you probably know, an Editor is the superior to an Associate Editor. And there are a number of cases that support the notion that that particular bit of print vitriol was not an isolated incident either in that journal or from that writer. I could cite chapter and verse in certain issues but it would be much easier for Anna to do that than for me.

As for threats from QRL, this is not the first time he's *attempted* to threaten me online. It won't work.

Terese--

If you attack someone in public, you can expect a public response. When the predominant theme is tag the object of animosity (in this case, me), the response will likely be an angry one. But please, for the sake of this discussion not devolving into a flame war--knock it off!

Here's a bit of financial transparency for you:

No one gets paid at the Raintown Review. As Editor I receive 20 copies of every issue from the publisher, John Oelfke; as Associate Editor, Quincy gets 10.

Technically I have right of veto over everything that goes in the journal, but I don't exercise it often because I believe in variety and freedom of speech.

I have been known to tone down the language in Quincy's essays, which he will attest to, but I don't change the thrust of them because they no more reflect my opinion than do the reviews we publish of books I may or may not have read.

If you want to know how I feel about things, read my editorials.

Exactly, Anna. I know you caught some flak for some things I said in Raintown. But you were kind and civilized about it, even when people threatened to write rebuttals. Imagine if you were actually held responsible for the things *I* wrote. There'd be chaos.

Now imagine if an editor tried to change what I wanted to write? More chaos. That way lies madness.

And besides, we're way off topic.

Best,

Bill

Yes...and verging on ad hominem territory to boot.

This is a worthy discussion to be having, and I don't think there's any reason to close this thread (which would be a disservice on many levels), but everyone: please try to stick to the issues and not negative interpersonal stuff.
