There are many eloquent and passionate writers here, and I hope they will take advantage of this window of opportunity. It remains open until February 20th.

As for me, I feel like all the breath has been knocked out of me, on this topic, and I am not sure I can muster anything at all to say to them. It feels futile, and I cannot shut out Tecumseh's prophetic words of warning, that the roads would come in, desecrate the graves of the ancestors, and the sacred places would be annihilated forever.

I just may, Roger. How do you suggest I frame my salutation? "Dear General Custer"?

It blows my mind. A century has passed, and not a thing has changed except the names -- same actors, same motives, same tactics. I saw that a new bill has been proposed, which would excuse a driver from running down a protester, as long as he claimed it was an accident, and I was reminded of those heinous laws declaring open season on the Indian, at the height of the power of the Texas Rangers, and Lamar -- that "poet," politician, and notorious Indian killer.

And they named a university after the man.

Thank God my brother-in-law and sister, despite enrollment in the Cherokee Nation, do not live on the rez, itself. The way things are going, I might otherwise be preparing myself for some bizarre scene in which the Tulsa sheriff's department confiscates their SUV, and forces them on foot to march to California
