Alicia has two marvellous poems in the issue that arrived today.
And in his article "Shadow Language" Eric Ormsby praises Tim's "wiry, poised, almost runic verse" and quotes the first stanza of "Hadrian Bereaved," referring to the "tightness of the diction, the perfect rhymes, the gorgeous vocabulary saved from preciousness by the severity of the cadence . . ." There's more, all VERY laudatory and true.

Thanks, Deborah, for the announcement & good words. The Sphere apparently makes a strong showing, as besides a rave of OUR Tim Murphy, there is also an essay by OUR Dick Davis.

Ormsby's description certainly nails Tim's work! I look forward to reading this issue.
All the best to Alicia, Tim and Dick!

Deborah, many thanks for calling this to my attention. My ears turned as red as my hair when I read it. I would note, however, that the critic quoted a very early poem from a time when I used far more Latinate diction and that I think my mature work falls far more squarely into the Frost/Hardy tradition than into the continuum from Dante to Geoffrey Hill that he is discussing. Wonderful essay, though.
Aliki's poems are truly marvelous. I can't get at Dick Davis' essay on the site, but here's the URL: http://www.newcriterion.com/

Congratulations to Alicia and Tim. I found "Variations on an Old Standard" quite exquisite, and also the brief snatch from "Hadrian Bereaved".

Thanks for the URL, Tim!
What fun, Alicia, interrupting those tercets in the graveyard poem with the couplet
Quote:
A priest sits at his newspaper and tarries
Over the headlines and obituaries.
|
which to me seemed to be channeling the spirit of
Quote:
In the room the women come and go
Talking of Michelangelo.
|
I also enjoyed Alicia's sweet, tiny adjectives (well, the tiny adjective) for the violinist mosquitoes in "Variations", in view of her recent comment about sweet, tiny bugs (in the Mastery forum's recent Keats/Hunt grasshopper/cricket topic.)
