Default Submittable: A Note of Reassurance

In another thread, some members had expressed annoyance that certain editors seemed to be letting submissions languish for months, then rejecting the submissions after only a quick glance.

While there's no proof that this doesn't happen anywhere, I found the following blog entry reassuring. Apparently the visible tracking on Submittable does not show everything, especially since editors have a certain amount of leeway in how they use the service. Both work style and editorial costs may be factors in those decisions.

"In actuality, work can get quite a bit of attention and never show up on Submittable as 'In-Progress,'"says the author.

Here's a link to the blog:

Thanks, Claudia. By coincidence, I was wondering about that very question earlier today.

All that must be true. I've got a sub on there that is still marked "Received" and the poem/s were published by the journal some time ago!

Perhaps I should be reassured, but it still irks to get a rejection today from a contest submission that never budged from "received" till it turned "declined."

Maybe it would irk less, John, if you got it in your head that most editors simply ignore updating the submittable info - they've got enough else on their minds - and you'd be a happier poet if you ignored it as well.

Good advice on both points, Michael.

I found this to be very useful as well, and I believe Submittable ended up including this in a blog post.
