"I hope something happens to make Loyola feel consequences for this idiocy."
You mean, Siham, that the good Lord will serve them as they deserve?
I concur.

Yes, I'd love to teach as adjunct faculty but I can't afford it, the pay is so laughably low. On the other hand, I've heard any number of horror stories about politics at universities, which is one big reason I've avoided them.
Ned Balbo deserves better, and I hope he gets it.

If I remember correctly, Ned's talented wife, Jane Satterfield, is tenured at another Baltimore-area college, so Ned has geographic limitations too, which will make it even harder for him.

Thanks everyone for your generosity & encouragement. I wrote the piece mainly to bring what's taking place out of the shadows: many adjuncts around the nation, full or part-time, face the same lack of due process.
What's especially sad is that Loyola University Maryland's tenured faculty stood up for their full-time adjuncts but were blocked from above. They deserve credit for living up to their principles.
Mike, Jane is actually tenured in the same department that I left.

As a native of Baltimore, a poet, English professor, and one-time adjunct teacher at the University of Santa Clara (who was dropped as a result of a two-year rule to keep adjuncts from receiving pension money), I sympathize deeply with Ned. Hang in there, Ned, and may you find an equal or better job in the Baltimore area.

Everywhere we look, administrations of all sorts grow too powerful, too luxurious, too monied. This wretched tale is yet another that contributes to the current doubts about academia.
My best to Ned and Jane...

If you haven't already done so, please consider commenting on the article site itself. Thoughtful comments left there are more likely to demonstrate the degree of interest that will make Loyola pay attention.

Great idea, Maryann--let's all pitch in. I just left a message. It takes a couple of minutes because we have to register... but not long.

Just a heads-up for those who register to comment: the password e-mail that was sent to me went to my spam folder, so check if you don't see a reply right away.
