Heartbleed: Are You Safe or Not?
You don't have to understand what the SSL Heartbleed that's been bugging the web recently is, but if you're a user of one of these popular sites and want to ensure your account there is not hacked, you might need to change your password at the appropriate website based on the tabulated recommendations shown.
Cheers,
...Alex

Not true, Ross. Changing password helps because the affected websites have been working furiously to update their SSL server software with the latest patch ... at least that's what they're supposed to be doing. Indeed, the patching is over and done with at about all the compromised big websites. So, if your password had been compromised pre-patching, then the hackers can use if anytime, patch or no patch. Hence, the call to change passwords now.

This article seems ambiguous on the matter. And exposure to Heartbleed goes back to 2011!

Andrew - the bug has only been around for that long, but has only been recently discovered, which is why all the fuss is happening now. It's something to do with a buggy implementation of a specific component of the SSL software system.

Alex, you may well be right, we had experts here on tv news saying you should change your password but only after the patch, others saying it was no use? I no longer have any internet connection to my finances, I was was hacked earlier this year so got rid of VISA. My bank manager said the banks are barely keeping up with the hackers, so for me it's not worth the risk. Also the bank treats you as a suspect, you can wait months for your losses to be returned and in my case I didn't get some back because I couldn't prove it was not my own purchases.

For an "explain like I'm five*" version, check this. Warning: it may give you the willies, and convince you to change your passwords. Like, right now! :
