Default Larkin's letters to Monica

Letters to Monica was published recently, and I've now got round to reading a few articles on the subject. They're interesting, I thought, so here they are:

Rachel Cooke's review:

Martin Amis' review:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010...letters-monica

John Sutherland's Monica Jones obit:

Interesting when he writes to Monica and says he feels 'Church Going' isn't good enough to go in 'The Less Deceived'.

That reminds me of the selection he made of his own verse for his volume of modern British poetry. I can't remember what he chose, only that it wasn't what I would have picked, either as favourites or as good-but-lesser-known poems.

Just finished Rachel Cooke's piece. It's actually very moving, in its way. On to the next...

Thanks,

Bill

Well, finished the Amis. It's amazing how two people can take the same subject and lead it towards such different ends. One makes it both engaging and moving, the other makes it slightly unpleasant, a little disagreeable, something from which one desires to move away slowly.

I do wonder what was in those diaries...

Thanks,

Bill

I posted a thread on GT about a newly discovered poem to her.

"They fuck you up" was his Innisfree - and now "loaf-haired" is this poor woman's "She walks in beauty" . . . .
