Tony and Wendy, thank you for your thoughtfulness.

Here's the last version of the translation:

When You Are Old (Ronsard Translation)

When you are old and seated by the fire
You’ll card and spin your wool in failing light
And sing the song I made, and then admire
How Ronsard celebrated you one night.
The sound will wake the maids who’ve been half-sleeping,
Bone-weary after bringing in the hay,
And at your song, they’ll not take up their sweeping,
But say your name is blessed from that day.

And I, beneath the earth, a boneless specter,
A nourishment to myrtle under shade,
Will know that you regret untasted nectar,
Reminded of the love we never made.
Then take my love, believe and do not sorrow:
The roses gathered now are brown tomorrow.

Terese Coe

Quand vous serez bien vielle, au soir, à la chandelle,
Assise auprès du feu, dévidant et filant,
Direz, chantant mes vers et vous émerveillant:
"Ronsard me célébrait du temps que j'étais belle."
Lors vous n'aurez servante oyant telle nouvelle,
Déjà sous le labeur à demi sommeillant,
Qui au bruit de Ronsard ne s'aille réveillant,
Bénissant votre nom de louange immortelle.

Je serai sous la terre, et fantôme sans os;
Par les ombres myrteux je prendrai mon repos;
Vous serez au foyer une vieille accroupie,
Regrettant mon amour et votre fier dédain.
Vivez si m'en croyez, n'attendez à demain;
Cueillez dès aujourd'hui les roses de la vie.

Pierre de Ronsard, 1550

Wonderful translation, Terese. I am glad to hear that you may be doing more of them for an e-book.

Susan, thanks! It's good to see you're back again, I don't think I've seen your name lately. Yes, I'm doing a lot of translating now, and enjoying the challenge immensely. I hope you're back to stay.

Terese,

Unfortunately, I am teaching full time again, after a one-year sabbatical, and my heavy course load has prevented me from doing any new writing or checking into Erato more than occasionally, for very short periods. I try to keep an eye on what's going on, though seldom have the time to comment. I hope that may improve in time, but I can't be very optimistic. I look forward to the school breaks, when I may have the chance to become a regular again.

Susan

Well at least there's a good reason you're not around, and you're not just missing in action. Thanks for letting everyone know, and I'll hope to see your poems and crits during the holidays and breaks! Until Thanksgiving then!

Terese

What a beautiful translation, Terese. It has the kind of effortless grace that is (as anyone knows who has tried verse translation) extremely difficult to pull off.

I look forward to reading more of these. Congratulations!

Catherine

That's so kind of you to say, thank you.

I'm very much hoping you'll post some of your translations on the Lariat when Tim kicks off the start of his translators' forum (whether it will be permanent or not I have no idea!). Perhaps you'll have some answers for the questions I posed there as well? Or pose any other questions you come up with yourself!

I'm very excited at the prospect of seeing more of the translation work you and others here have done! Hoping I might be able to "feel out" some of the Italian and Spanish, as no doubt many can do.

Terese, it's been a little while since I last visited the Lariat forum, so I didn't realize the threads on translation were there. I would be happy to participate in the forum. And as I said, it will be a pleasure to watch more of your translations take shape.

Catherine, all the better I was able to let you know about the translation forum, and will hope to learn from some of your work there in the near future!

Sharon, thank you and warm congratulations on your new moderatorship of the Art board!
