Maryann

Listening to your delivery of your own poems was a treat. Your read with the care and precision and passion I expected to hear from a poet who has the courage to speak about the self in such an engaging manner.

Absolutely fantastic, haunting poems, Maryann. "Checking the Funeral Musicians' Schedule" has been haunting me all day, in fact. Loved "Airheads" since I'm one. There isn't a poem here I didn't love. These are poems to keep going back to. Now if I can only get my teenage son to give me his iPod - my computer audio is pretending to be kaput. Your work is so moving, unique, engaging.

I hope you get your audio back one way or another, Siham. Thanks for the kind words.

Maryann,

I much enjoyed reading your work. It has the strong sense of you that also comes through in your interactions on this site. Morally tough but fair. In fact, your poems are quite moral but not preachy. I had said as much about prior work that was shopped on the site not long ago. It holds true for your other works after my reading. Kudos to you.

One mark of your accomplishment is to take something commonplace (a child’s rebellion and distance in “Flight”) and avoid every sentimental pitfall that hazards such a poem, without a slip. Good work. Well felt and wrought. It was moving.

Much more success come your way,

Don Jones

That's humbling praise, Don; thanks.

I do hope folks are listening as well as reading. (I know some of you who posted above have definitely listened.) An important point for the future of the series is whether or not it's actually helpful to have the texts presented. Who finds it helpful? Who thinks it detracts, or discourages listening? Alex might like to know, especially since there seems to be no way (that I can see) of counting downloads as opposed to page views.

Maryann,

I have just listened to your podcast, and found it extremely enjoyable. Unlike others here, I was not familiar with your work, and this was a wonderful introduction. With my peculiar taste, it's not surprising that I was most struck by "Saturday Edition" and "Checking the Funeral Musician's Schedule," but all of the poems spoke to me. Thanks so much for sharing these!

Jeff

Thanks Jeff for bumping this and bringing it to my attention (somehow missed it when it first posted)
Wonderful work Maryann. I am taking notes since I need to record a piece.

I don't think the poems should be posted. Let's just listen. I'm just listening to my 181 minute recording of Beowulf from six years ago, and when I hear that, and then listen to myself here or at the zines and podcasts I've recently done, I am just appalled at how my voice has disintegrated. Well, let's get these recordings done while we still sound strong.
