I'd like to propose a new rule for Eratosphere. In the future, whenever someone publicly announces that he is leaving, it should be against the rules (a) for others to try to change that person's mind, and (b) for that person to continue posting for at least six months.

What Roger said. Retroactively, in William's case.

Have compassion my fellow libtards. What we see here is happening all over the country. Thousands and thousands of people wandering the streets and on the air waves reciting the same right-wing talking points over and over, despair escalating. This used to work! What's happened? My God!

It's the end of a Sam Shepard play. A despairing man left on stage with nothing but rhetoric and loneliness to keep him company, reciting the madras that were supposed to make the propaganda come true. I bet there were millions of the same type of people left behind in the old Soviet Union after the collapse. Hunched over coffee cups of vodka, full of bitterness that the Russian people failed to make Lenin and Stalin's dreams come true. Can one recover from propaganda addiction? Interesting question. I think I'll bring up with my twelve-step buddies.

After I wrote the above I went to a news site and saw that Sam Shepard had died. I'm not a crystal-gazing "mystic" but it is unsettling that I was writing something about him earlier today and then used him in a comment. His work meant a great deal to me when I was younger. And he's on my mind for the first time in a long time on the day I discover he's dead.

You know what. It's relevant. All the time spent caught up with those wasting their lives ranting and spewing mass-produced psychosis while life evaporates. Is that what a poetry board is about?

I apologize for my participation in this waste of our precious time.

John,

I'm sorry that Sam Shepard died on the day you'd mentioned him . . . yes, that kind of thing is unsettling.

This thread has also become unsettling, and I've received lots of PMs and emails about its more recent content. I think it's safe to say that no more good can come of this ''discussion'', so let's call it a day. I shall lock the thread now.

Thank you to those who have managed to remain civil.

Jayne
