All the Happiest Cities
Professors at Harvard and Vancouver report that all five of the happiest cities in the United States are in Louisiana. It must be the presence of Gail White and Julie Kane...

"All the Happiest Cities" would make a good book title.

Then again, ignorance is bliss, they say, so I should definitely up the happiness quotient in my neighborhood.
That is a great title, John -- though personally I prefer Settling for Beauty.

Must be the Napoleonic Code. It's a recipe for happiness.

We are proud of our Napoleonic Code, yes -- proud and protective. Louisiana, in fact, holds six of the top ten positions, for happiness in America. My own city, Lake Charles, ranks eighth:

I always thought Louisiana was pretty wild, high crime rate but then sometimes the wild places are the fun places.

Oddly enough, New Orleans did not rank as a Happiness City, though it is certainly a great Pleasure City, the most laid-back place I ever lived in my life. Now I am 6 miles from Lafayette, so presumably happiness is close at hand.

As for unhappiness, I drove through Indiana recently (Gary #9, Evansville-Henderson #5, South Bend #3) and am glad that I followed my hunch and didn't stop except for gas and coffee.

If New Orleans doesn't make the list, I have serious misgivings about the study's credibility. And living in Shreveport or Baton Rouge might be too high a price to pay for happiness.
