Dear fellow champion of poetry,
On behalf of the Library of Congress Poetry and Literature Center, I am reaching out to you for recommendations for the 22nd Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry, to be announced in June for a Sept. 2016-May 2017 appointment. We hope you will join our past Poets Laureate—as well as scholars, editors, critics, literary presenters and lit org executive directors, and media figures from around the country—in recommending candidates for the position.
I ask that you send along the following by February 8th:
· The names of up to three poets you would like to recommend for the position
· An indication of your top choice
Your recommendations will be kept strictly confidential. Once I receive and tabulate the recommendations, I will meet with the leadership of the Library’s National and International Outreach Division (of which the Poetry and Literature Center is a part) to discuss the results. We will then present up to six finalists to the Librarian of Congress to consider, as defined by Public Law 99-194. As part of that final step, we hope to reach out to a number of you for confidential assessments of the finalists.
Thank you for your instrumental help with this, and for supporting the Poet Laureateship, the Poetry and Literature Center, and the Library of Congress in our work to promote the art. Feel free to write or call with any questions you may have.
Yours,
Robert Casper
