Congratulations, Kyle Norwood, on an excellent translation, and thanks also for giving my own translation two votes.

Jan, congratulations on your own win.

I don't know what others feel, but it might be better to put your own comments, and the modified version of your translation, on the thread specifically for your entry. Apart from anything else, that would make it much easier for people to find what you have to say, and your latest thoughts.

A very warm welcome to Diane Arnson Svarlien and Jan Schreiber! Glad to have you aboard. Although everyone is probably exhausted from this event, I hope to see new friends and old over at the Translation Board in the near future, for general workshopping.

Thanks for the compliments, and sorry about the red herrings about my identity. When I almost immediately outed myself by posting something incriminating under my own name (DOH!!!), I felt obligated to weave a more tangled web than I had initially planned.

Disagreeing with myself was easy, though, since I'm often of two minds about things. And elsewhere Cathy noted puzzling inconsistencies between my praise and censure of liberties taken with texts and rhyme schemes. Yup, guilty as charged. (Although, looking at these deviations in a different way, my standard is actually very, very consistent: "Do I think it works in this particular poem?")

I had guessed that Julie might be the DG, though, as I had mentioned, I had thought the singer was actually Maryann Corbett. I also guessed that Mary might have done "I am a man" because she seemed the likeliest person--of the translators I knew had probably entered--to use "bitchin'" in a translation. But it could have been a translator I did not know, since clearly we had a few of those.

I am so abashed at not having participated at all that perhaps I should just stay hidden. But I've got to express my admiration of the work of all involved.

I've been up to my eyebrows in stuff to do, so when I took a stab at my favorite Brel song and was appalled at how unsatisfactory it was, I didn't have the heart to continue. It's terrifyingly difficult to get the flavor of the original, to get it note for note, and to stay even approximately true to the meaning. I bow to you all.

It's a great pleasure to see new and distinguished names among the participants.

And it's another a great pleasure to hear Julie's singing voice; in our various e-mails over the years, we've talked about singing quite a bit. My asthma is still giving me fits, so I would never have been up to the task. Yet again, I'm amazed at the amount of work Julie's done for us.

Well done, everyone.

Thank you for the welcome, Julie (if I may), and for your phenomenal efforts as both commentator and singer. And thank you to all the participants and everyone who gave me the courage of my Brecht with your votes and kind comments and useful critique. I am totally thrilled to be a winner! It is a great honor.
Yours, Diane

Congratulations to the deserved winners, and deserved praise to Julie for putting up with, huh hmm, some of the more cumbersome submissions, which, I'm sure she did by taking a deep breath in order to suppress any unintended mirth. In any case, the goil's got pipes.
