Default The American Conservative

Quote:
I’m so cynical about American politics now that I am not surprised by the Trump people meeting with the Russians. I am not even surprised by the chronic lying. This is what I expect from Trump, a man of no character. Yet potential obstruction of justice is something else. It’s not about ethics or morals, but the rule of law. If Mueller can find anything to back up that kind of charge, Trump will have to be impeached. A Republican Party in charge of Congress that cannot muster the votes to impeach a Republican president under those conditions is rotten to the core.-- Rod Dreher

Well let's go, let's get him out. I'm on board. Where do I sign up?

But you get a real politician in his place, which could be worse.

Oh bravo Rod Dreher. This, of course, is the man who wrote "The Benedict Option". He also attends the Orthodox Church in Baton Rouge. I keep hoping he will meet Arthur and find him a job as a tutor of Western Civilization (I believe that Arthur, before he retired, taught the only 2-year Western Civ course in America).

I'm willing to take that risk. The need to get rid of Trump isn't a political question of preferring a president whose views are more in line with my own. It arises from the fact that Trump himself is unacceptable. He should not be given a pass simply because his replacement may also end up being a nightmare. Let's deal with one bad president at a time.

Perfect, Roger, Bob. I think McCain's recent diagnosis made me reminiscent for the 2008 election. I wouldn't vote for him, at least not for anything that had sway on a national scale, though locally I might. Palin, my god. But he conducted a respectable campaign. He has, I think, honor. I suppose I miss reasonable opposition.

Yes, honor. There's an old-fashioned word.

Is the American Conservative part of "the Resistance" now? To be fair, they're better than the Dems on foreign policy (isolationists who aren't into bombs being better than interventionists who are), but as soon as they reach American shores, they get multiply godawful. Alex Nichols captures their gist well here:

Quote:
The American Conservative’s contributors largely adhere to the Old Right value of isolationism, to their credit. However, the energy not spent calling for nuclear strikes on Iran is instead devoted to berating a fallen society for rejecting traditional Catholic values. These include fanatical homophobia, strict gender segregation of public restrooms, and soul-destroying self-hatred. Many of the most popular articles are by Rod Dreher, a fascinating specimen who was raised Methodist and converted to Catholicism in 1993. This itself is indicative of a personality disorder, but he one-upped himself by becoming Eastern Orthodox in 2006. For Dreher, religion is a springboard for misanthropy. From his latest article: “We are dead men. We have poisoned ourselves. We are a depraved civilization that deserves judgment. And we are going to get it.” If that doesn’t float your boat, they also have articles about how liberals are too self-righteous.
Goatee qualities: Unbelievably horny to the point of causing profound psychological damage but unwilling to honk off, fixated on bathroom politics, website looks like shit
Anti-goatee qualities: Against foreign intervention, except for the Crusades
Worst current headline: “How Many People Actually Feel White Guilt?”

That was the point of posting the article. When Pat Buchanan's magazine of record agrees that Trump is a disaster it perhaps has more impact than if it came from The Nation. Posting a link to an article is not endorsing the magazine.

Trump is political porn. Worse: he's greed and all it's related attributes personified. Even worse: he loves to hate. Worser still: signs that the Peter Principle has kicked in for him are everywhere. What's good? This, too, shall pass. Small consolation...

John, I read through the entire Rod Dreher piece in The American Conservative as well as the accompanying 118 reactions/comments to it.

The 118 comments contain cogent arguments from all sides of the grim situation. What does not escape me is the swamp-like muck and mire of the Trump camp that is growing like a grotesque organism.

That they (the Trump Swamp) argue this is politics as usual is bizarre.

Just now I'm hearing that Trump has floated the idea that he has the power to pardon himself. It grows and grows...
