Default New Editor at The Oldie

Following the death of Alexander Chancellor last Saturday, here's the announcement of the appointment of his successor, the rather young Harry Mount:

A splendid choice - though some might say he's a bit too youngie.

I had no idea Chancellor was such a mighty boozer.

Yes - 45 is indeed young, John!

Did you happen to read the two subsequent links? I'll post them here just in case:

This, from James Pembroke, the publisher:
http://www.theoldie.co.uk/article/ne...r-of-the-oldie

and then this, from Harry Mount himself about his new job:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/think...youngie-heart/

It's a pleasant read. I can't wait to see if - or rather how - The Oldie format will change. Harry will obviously want to put his own stamp on it, won't he?

Hey, maybe this is my chance to ask for a complete page for the poetry competition! [In my dreams, I suspect.] And a different bloody prize after too many years of the Chambers Biographical Dictionary. Just how many of those damn things can they still have to get rid of??

Go on Jayne. Use all your charms. I fear mine would be wasted.

Let's hope Mount values the Oldie comp. Recent layout restrictions and choice of winning entries have made it seem odd and perfunctory and I fear it may go the way of the NS comp.

I am more sanguine, Adrian. What Chancellor did is not really relevant. Mount is the man who teaches oldies Latin. I have great hopes of him. And I think the competition is popular. As was the Staggers one. But lefties are notoriously short on humour.
