Default "The Secret Auden"

There's an interesting essay by Edward Mendelson in the New York Review of Books--

http://www.nybooks.com/articles/arch.../secret-auden/

"W.H. Auden had a secret life that his closest friends knew little or nothing about. Everything about it was generous and honorable. He kept it secret because he would have been ashamed to have been praised for it."

"By refusing to claim moral or personal authority, Auden placed himself firmly on one side of an argument that pervades the modern intellectual climate but is seldom explicitly stated, an argument about the nature of evil and those who commit it."

Refreshing.

A lot here our major poets, such as they are, should ponder.

David,

Thank you for that link. A wonderful article. Choked me up a little, in fact.

Thanks, a very good read. Self reflection: I am much to positive and optimistic, an improbable idealist, concerning the probable future of our war/tech/consumer humanity; but much too stubborn and obstinate a human's human to admit, or even to overtly recognize, any validity among those professors of predictable humanity's self-destruction.
