Default Newburyport Literary Festival April 30

Rhina Espaillat, Mike Juster, Erica Dawson, Bill Baer, and a host of other mostly formal – or at least formalish – poets, including four Wilbur Award winners, will highlight the poetry section of the day-long Newburyport Literary Festival in Newburyport, Mass., on April 30. All poetry presentations will take place at the Central Congregational Church in downtown Newburyport. Here’s a link to the entire schedule, maps, and etc. Specific poetry timetable is indicated below:

8:30 – 10:00 AM. Breakfast with the Poets - Readings from their recent books by Powow River Poets Midge Goldberg (2015 Wilbur Award winner), Mike Juster (2002 Wilbur winner), Don Kimball, Alfred Nicol (2004 Wilbur winner) and Anton Yakovlev.

10:00 – 11:00 AM. Life Work - Daniel Mark Epstein and Jay Parini

11:00AM – 12:00 PM. Learning from Experience - April Lindner and Bruce Bennet.

1:00 – 2:00 PM. A New York State of Mind – Transplanted New Yorkers, Powow River Poets founder and godmother Rhina Espaillat, and opening act Michael Cantor, read poems of a simpler time when Fiorello LaGuardia was always mayor and Joe DiMaggio was always in center field.

2:00 – 3:00 PM. Ancient Myth and Table Talk - Bill Coyle (New Criterion Poetry Prize Winner) and Kirun Kappur.

3:00 – 4:00 PM. A Return to Form – Erica Dawson (Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize winner) and poet and editor William Baer.

I have previous engagements (a baby shower and a memorial) this weekend, but may you all have a blast and break your respective patooties! Sounds grand, and hope this will be an annual festival too!

It might be worth going just to see if two transplanted New Yorkers really can stop talking about the good old days in New York after only one hour. I don't believe that's ever been done before, and it may never be done again.

I, too, wish I could be there! Went last year and it was wonderful.
