Default Chandler

James Matthew Wilson has published a major essay on all three of Cathy's books. It is a close and very perceptive reading: http://www.catholicworldreport.com/2...rine-chandler/

Next month the same for me.

What an intelligent, articulate appreciation -- a real tribute. Congrats, Cathy! That's a nice author photo, by the way (I love the hat).

Excellent and informative review. I hope it increases the number of Cathy's readers.

Thanks, Tim, Nausheen, Susan and Michael. I've had lots of positive comments on James's essay on Facebook.

Wonderful article. I am interested in your response to it, Catherine--to what extent are you concerned with the author's (and the journal's) central concern of Catholicism, per se? I imagine that no answer to the question would undercut the review in my regard. I'm just more interested than I usually am in a response from the poet being reviewed given the reviewer's perspective.

NB: When I open the page, there is an ad for a book called "Why I Don't Call Myself Gay." I read an article in the New York Times yesterday about the Cardinals of the Arch Dioceses of Newark and New York, a compare and contrast piece. The Cardinal in New York, Dolan, blurbed this book. The Cardinal in Newark blurbed another new book that is premised on the Catholic church having to accept the word "gay" out of human decency and respect for people. Yeah New Jersey!

Not sure this link to the article works... the Times says I can't read any more Times article this month. Yeah Newark!

Yes, I really enjoyed the article mostly because it reminded me of some of my favorite poems. While I don't disagree with anything in the article, it's interesting that I never actually considered Catherine to be a "Catholic" poet in the same way I consider Tim to be, and the article didn't actually make clear to me in what sense her poems are said to be peculiarly Catholic. But it was an intelligent and thoughtful reading of her work and an appreciation that I share.

The review does a wonderful job of interrogating creativity and rightly showing how Catherine works in a grand tradition at capturing the forms of nature in the spirit of the spirit behind Creation. Call it God, as did the reviewer, who goes one step further by backing it into his parking lot of Catholicism. One would expect the parking job from this reviewer and in this journal, but that's not important. What matters is what he delivers, which is an excellent read and review of the poetry. He, like, gets it!

Well for me, shamefully, the review has mainly served to introduce me to Catherine's poetry which, from the extracts, seems quite wonderful. So thanks Tim and congratulations Catherine, it's a good review also.
