Poet Philip Dacey Has Died
My friend and poetry mentor Philip Dacey died on July 7 at the age of 77 after a two-year fight against leukemia. He was a writer of both formal and free verse and published thirteen books of poetry, but may be best known to some of you as one of the two editors of Strong Measures, one of the early anthologies of contemporary formal verse (1986). He was particularly supportive of other poets and encouraged several fledgling writers who went on to publish books of their own, including Leo Dangel, Bill Holm, David Jauss, Barton Sutter, Alixa Doom, and some who will doubtless publish books in the future. He was a hard-working poet who was always writing, but still had time for students and colleagues.
