Rejections for Christmas
Spreading some cheer, to any poets here who may be tempted to despair at this sensitive time of year, over our fortunes in life.
This morning, I read that one of my poet friends -- on Christmas Eve -- received not one, not two, but three journal rejections.
My immediate thought was, "Really? Really? What sort of editorial Ebenezer sends out rejections on Christmas Eve? Particularly to poets, who notoriously throw themselves from bridges for the slightest things...?"
I guess there is always something for which to be grateful. When in disbelief, I related this to my husband, he swallowed his pumpkin pie, and snickered, "You gotta imagine these guys must say to themselves, 'I didn't used to be heartless.'"
Merry Christmas, all, and a Happy New Year.

Wait, does that mean that the only reason I didn't receive any rejections this week was the editors were too kind to disappoint me during the holidays? I'm not looking forward to January.

I got a rejection on Christmas eve, but my feeling is that if I am going to be rejected, the sooner, the better. Having someone delay the rejection to spare my feelings is not a kindness. Knowing that I have reached a dead end in one direction gives me more time to think about where to send the poem next. Any poet who gets devastated by a rejection is in the wrong line of work.

That's an admirable post, Jim, but it doesn't quite fit in with our plans for this thread so we will, regretfully, have to turn it down. The very best of luck on your future posts.

Relinquish is a much better word, Jim.

The feeling of déjà vu is peculiarly disconcerting...

Jeez, I got about halfway though that link of Sam's and started to lose the will to live . . .
Liz, Mark, Liz, Mark, Liz, Mark . . . did anyone make it through to the end? You have my full admiration if you did.
Jayne
(And you've dedicated a whole new GT thread to that article Just how much response to it do you want, Sam??)

I sorta kinda got through the story. Yawn.
I wonder how many TNY readers really assume most poets are that introverted and ineffectual.
