Sometimes my country delights me, too.

Splendid, Ann - and I take it our 'country' in this case is Europe.
I'll second that and cough up accordingly.
We all owe Greece - big time.

OK, I've made my contribution. Greece has always been good to me and the world has not been good to Greece.

I'd heard about this but didn't know how to find it.
Thanks, Ann!

And it seems that the Greeks have given the big finger to the Fourth Reich.

Well, it seems like the crowd funding won't make the target, but nobody in their right mind thought it would. Even so, a lot of people pitched in, a couple of people pledged five grand and nothing alters the fact that a bloke in Bethnal Green said "... I just thought, sod it, I'll have a crack".

Of course our country is not Europe, Nigel. It is certainly not mine. Bloody fascist conspiracy. Three cheers for the quite splendid Greeks.
What Brian said! Death to the European Union! Not, note this well Michael. to Europeans. Germany is a lovely place for holidays. And France (the Southern end), the land of magnificent railways. And wonderful Holland. And Prague. And Vienna. And Budapest. That seems to cover my last few years holidays. I would add Italy but I haven't worked out how to get there on the train. We can't fly these days.
Oh, and Ireland. Scotland is not a foreign country, is it, Nigel?

I am a simple soul, knowing little about European politics and which countries are and are not on anyone's list of friends or foes. I started this thread as a bit of a shout-out for a country where a single lefty northerner can get off his arse and JFDI. And to drum up a bit of support for his British initiative
It was never about other countries or any particular politicians. Just about people.
Thom's fund closes today, so, off you go with your politics; I'm on holiday myself as it happens. In Ledbury.

John, you aren't the only one wanting the European Union to die. Mr. Putin shares your wish, divide and sunder, divide and plunder. And the UK's home-grown, neo-fascist, anti-EU party UKIP, like similar exit parties in other countries (French National Front, Sweden's Swedish Democrats, Greek's Golden Dawn--not to be confused with Syrzia, the currently ruling party--etc.), is pals with him and doing common cause.
This isn't news for anyone keeping up. And if one is keeping up, it is disingenuous to pretend not to understand the consequences that would befall a shattered EU.
Economic war is fought alongside hot wars. Part of Mr. Putin's conquest scheme is to control Europe by dictating terms for oil and infrastructure. Another part is to dismantle Europe's determination to protect her member states from outside aggression. These sources below do not originate with rouge conspiracy bewailers.
