Well, frankly I'm not sure what the new twist is. Bookstores diversifying with other products is certainly a fine idea but Amazon has more than just books too.
I do a lot of shopping on Amazon. In fact, I would say that at least half of my retail purchases (besides groceries etc.) are made there. But one of the great things Amazon has done in recent years is provide the Marketplace, where the independent sellers can peddle their wares through the site. Almost all books I buy through Amazon (other than brand new books, or ones I need within a couple of days) I buy from independent retailers. Amazon might still be a "problem" for the indies, but it's also allowing the more auspicious little fish to reach a bigger river, rather than remain stuck in their own smaller tributaries.
