My aimless browsing in Barnes & Noble led me to a magazine called "First Things," a magazine "whose purpose is to advance a religiously informed public philosophy for the ordering of society". To my delight, the issue opened right up to a wonderful new sonnet by Rhina (with a very interesting rhyme scheme). I think it was the only poem in the issue, so I can confidently report that their poetry is uniformly quite excellent.

It's particularly nice, I think, when fine poetry turns up in non-literary magazines.

I'd love to see Rhina's sonnet...any chance of posting it here?

Incidentally, today I received a copy of the 2003 Poet's Market and there smack on the front cover was a quote from Rhina. It was a blurb, not a poem...but still good to see her name out there!

Thanks, Lisa; I didn't know about this website myself. I'd like to add that the issue contains an absolutely stunning narrative essay--a memory piece--by poetry editor Jody Bottums, titled "Dakota Christmas." I knew him as a fine poet, but now I know he does prose equally well!

One more thing that I forgot: since you mention the rhyme sscheme, Lisa, I should tell you it's a Mason sonnet, a wonderful form devised by Madeline Mason, a NYC poet from the early 20th century. I use the form often: love the way it circles back to the first rhyme, and love the way it has an unexpected couplet in the middle.
