Default Me at Dunes Review

A while back (now culled) I mentioned I'd have a poem coming out at Dunes Review. And today the issue went live.

Hello, Andrew, I love the title "Snake Lips." That Hector simile is crazy but works--it works. Crazy.

Congrats,

Aaron

Glad it works. Not actually how it should appear in print though. I assume it might be a website issue, especially since I saw a proof. That said, I don't think it doesn't work as the site has it.

I attached a screen shot of how it (I assume) will appear in print--though I can't get it to be large, it's a little more ragged.

Also, Aaron, thanks for the commendation. Glad you feel the Hector allusion works. Coming from a classicist, it means a lot.

Ah, well that looks even better.

See, this is one of the reasons I'm leary of sending my fuzzy little baby chickens out: It seems, going by your post, and Claudia's thread in GD, that this kind of thing is not all that unusual?

It must be frustrating as hell.

Andrew,

I read the poem again, and I can't help asking:

Have you been reading the astoundingly good Marianne Moore? If not, you may be channeling her. Yeah, I know that's woo-ville, but hey, you never know. The only Moore-ian aspect missing in your poem is the ubiquitous quoting " " from other sources, which she did too much, if I can say that without pissing off her ghost.

Sorry Marianne!

Ha! Of course caught this, Bill. The syllabics (this one and the still relatively fresh on the non-met board) are influenced by my recent(-ish at this point in time) reading of Moore (and the fresh bio). Lots of my recent work has probably merged her and Hardy in some unholy way.

I had read her work reading her when I sent I finished this poem last August, so it's quite likely she hovers over it.

I think the world of early to mid-career Moore. Her "Critics and Connoisseurs" is, I think, one of the best poems of the 20th century.

The Convergence of the Twain? Couldn't resist. Great poem, that.

Seconded.

The book you read is the one I have, except I was lucky enough to find it in hardcover, in perfect, obviously untouched (unloved) condition, for pocket change at a thrift store. Those places are sometimes treasure troves. I think many people buy books by poets just to make a consummate library, but never crack them open.
