Hi Aaron,
Have you ever read any of John Muir's travel journals? If ever there was a naturalist who could express him/herself in poetic terms it's him, in my opinion. At least for now : ) Better than Thoreau, I think.

I was in Alaska in August and picked up his journal, "Travels in Alaska" to read while moving around Anchorage and environs. Gorgeous descriptive language of the living breathing natural world and his engagement with it.
