A Sonnet Success
Earlier this evening I was informed my poem “Cloistered” won a $150 prize in the Maria Faust Sonnet Contest, which is part of the annual Great River Shakespeare Festival held in Winona, MN. This year 469 sonnets were submitted by poets from across the U.S. and from overseas. Prizes are awarded in several categories. Since I’ve written very few sonnets, this award is especially gratifying.

That's fantastic news, Richard.
Well done!!!! (Go and write some more sonnets; that's not a bad rate per line )

Thank you, friends in the craft, for stopping by with your regards.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about this recent good fortune of mine is that I took a very old, rather unremarkable, twelve line poem from my junk folder, a poem written nearly 40 years ago, and rewrote and recast it as a sonnet. My expectations of the poem doing well in the Shakespeare sonnet contest were small indeed, but obviously the judges liked it. If there's a lesson here, it may be that we should hang on to our early and disappointing work and feel free to cannibalize ourselves.

Congratulations from Louisiana!
PS: I had a similar experience to yours when I took an old sonnet that had garnered a few rejections, changed the last two lines & it won a Nemerov.
Moral: NEVER THROW ANYTHING OUT!
