Default Larkin's car

Philip Larkin bought his first car in 1964, a Singer Gazelle. Sporty.

Sam, they should have hired you to replace Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear.

Mmmm.... The Singer Gazelle wasn't sporty, that was the Sunbeam Rapier http://www.classicandsportscar.ltd.u...pier_18093.jpg The Singer was just a slightly snooty version of the Hillman Minx.

Singer, in pre-Rootes days, had been a rather staid and respectable motor (definitely not a 'car'); my father ran a Hunter, complete with a splendid horse mascot on the bonnet. http://www.motorbase.com/pictures/co...oon-svlmax.jpg

Are poets a conservative bunch when it comes to cars? I was once offered Ted Hughes' Rover P5, http://assets.shannons.com.au/XDS895...7-rover-p5.jpg but it was in much too decrepit condition to be worth restoring.

I have driven five cars and crashed three of them. Must be my sportiness. I let Doreen drive me round these days. Wendy Cope says only TUMPS (Totally Useless Male Poets) don't drive. But Kingsley Amis didn't.

[QUOTE Are poets a conservative bunch when it comes to cars? QUOTE]

After she got married, Edna St Vincent Millay had an early 1920's Mercer 4 door convertible (sporty), and later on, an early 1930's Cadillac 4 door convertible (classy). They were probably secondhand, but so what?
