You all need Cathy Chandler's "Glad and Sorry Seasons"!
I read a great many new poetry books, and mss on their way to being new poetry books, and sometimes one grabs me and won't let go. One such has recently arrived that I absolutely need to crow about. It's titled "Glad and Sorry Seasons," and it's such a rich, sustained beauty that even though I knew beforehand how good Cathy Chandler is, I am compelled, after a third greedy reading, to go back again like a burglar planning a heist, to decide just what I'm going to steal. I may begin with the poem inspired by a line from Millay, but then there's the response to Frost, and the cento, and an ovillejo, and those seven sonnets on the deadly sins...and translations from both French and Spanish....It's no use, the whole book makes me itchy-fingered.
Cathy Chandler, of course, won the 2010 Howard Nemerov Sonnet Award, judged that year by Alicia Stallings, and is the author of "Lines of Flight," a haunting collection published by AbleMuse in 2011 from which I teach poem after poem.
For those of you who have not yet seen "...Seasons," it's published by Biblioasis, and the website is www.biblioasis.com.

Thank you, Rhina. It is a splendid collection -- Cathy is so precise in her renderings of so many gradations of gladness and sorrow -- and your recommendation is bound to steer a lot of readers in the right direction.

I will buy it without fail. Generous and admirable that you take the time to spread the word for Cathy.

This is better than Lines of Flight, a wonderful first volume. Buy it.

Thanks for posting, Rhina. I'm so glad you did this. I hope to get to this book eventually--I'm just launching into Lines of Flight at the moment.
And by the by--very early notice, and more info. to come--but I'm hosting a reading with Cathy Chandler, Tim Steele and Kevin Durkin at Beyond Baroque in Venice (Los Angeles) on Sept. 27, when the amazing Cathy is on her California tour! She'll be in the Bay Area too Oct. 1 for David Rosenthal's series.
Keep your eyes and ears peeled...
