Default River Styx 81/82

I have "Evergreen" in this 35th anniversary issue. Andrew Hudgins has a prose piece that is very funny.

I also have an essay/review on new editions of Dorothy Parker's verse in the April New Criterion.

Terrific news, Sam. I have my copy of River Styx, and it seems to me that "Evergreen" needed remarkably little revision from the version that was workshopped on Met a while back. Great essay, too, and thanks for the link--and now we know how you came across the "new mother" poem.

Sam,

I enjoyed the essay: learned some new things, had fun covering some familiar ground in an unfamiliar way. A little tough on Hellman, but what the heck? It was an enjoyable read.

Congrats!

Thanks,

Bill

Fun article, Sam. I agree that it takes some sifting to find the gems in her verse and that she marks time in some of the longer poems, waiting to spring her punch line. Still, it is easy to see why many enjoyed her attitude then and why some still do.

Much enjoyed the article, Sam - it's impossible to be too hard on Hellman.

Yes, greatly enjoyed, Sam.

And I agree, Frank. "Every word she writes is a lie, including 'and' and 'the'," as Mary McCarthy memorably put it. And by suing her, Hellman simply forced McCarthy to prove she was a liar in court, which turned out not to be very difficult.

Sam's article is now featured in Arts and Letters Daily.

Gregory - I forgot the MM line - how great was that!?

Sam,

I once was married to an actress who did a one-woman show on D.P. I must have seen it here and in Ireland, where I produced it, two hundred times. The material still stands up for me. I once went to a wedding that was in her old Hollywood home just off the Sunset Strip. I believe she was fired as a theater critic for giving Billie Burke a bad review. One of my favorite Constant Reader reviews was of Kerouac's On the Road. The concluding sentence was, "This is not a book to be tossed aside lightly; it should be thrown with great force."

Loved your article. It took me back to those days.
