Translation Bake-off
I'm making this a sticky, and therefore less easy to miss. Remember, entries can be new or old.
The Translation Bake-Off is our next DG event, and will be judged by the eminent Italianist, Geoffrey Brock (see separate thread for information about GB). To enter, PM one translated poem to me by midnight (U.S. Central time) on Sunday, June 27th. The work can be new, or previously published.
Please include the original poem, and a literal crib. If the original text is in an unfamiliar script, it would be an act of kindness to include a transliteration into Roman characters as well.
Geoffrey is going to look at 15 poems, which he will then narrow down to between ten and a dozen for commentary. If there are more than 15 entries, I’ll do the initial sifting. As usual, the entries will be anonymized before I send them to Geoffrey. His commentaries will be posted, two per day, starting on July 17th.
From then on please join in with your own comments (and guesses about the translators). When all of the entries have been posted, I will start the customary voting thread, culminating in a posting of the Sphere’s top three and Geoffrey’s own top three. Only then will the names of the translators be revealed.

Adam,
So I take it we're limited to sonnets?
Thanks,
Bill

Golly, that was never true before! I'm thinking that's an accident caused by copying a previous bakeoff announcement.

Horrors! - that'll teach me to cut and paste in so lazy a fashion.
Sorry Bill - no formal constraints of any kind. I'll edit that mistake out now.

I'm just wondering one thing: will it be a problem to submit a translation that was rather recently workshopped? On the side of other forum members, this might make anonymity not possible.

This is true, Kevin. Free choice. Decide as you think best.
Meanwhile, the deadline is coming up on Sunday, everyone! - so hurry hurry hurry to get your translations in.....
