Default The Sullivan-Zohar Psalms

23 and 51 are forthcoming in First Things, 27 in The Flea, 139 in Sewanee Theological Review. Chronicles is publishing a good sized speech I give in churches over the course of two issues, in which I analyze comparative versions of 133 and 131, and quote 2 and 33. So Alan and Seree are off to the races. Seree and Paul Mussell hope to have a final draft of the book for ecclesial review and approval next week. Wish Alan were around to see it, but he understood the significance of his last year on earth and died a contented poet.

All praise for the hard work you're doing to get these psalms out, Tim, and it's good to see Seree getting equal credit.

I'm going to hope and assume that Alan knows greater joys than acceptance and publication right now, but presumably God has a way to work those in.

Maryann, the end of my eulogy: "I do not pray for the repose of Alan Sullivan's soul, because thirty-seven years with me is enough Purgatory for anyone."

Tim

Good news! Encouraged to hear that the Psalms translation is being received so well. What a testimony: a new translation of the Psalms by a man whose suffering may have allowed him to hear and translate their message in a fresh way.

I'm looking forward to seeing them all together. Congrats to Seree for this major achievement. Scholarship and poetry combined and at their best.

Yes, it really is encouraging, and it's a reflection on this community created by Alex Pepple that this is where Seree and Alan met.

It is also astounding to me that nobody has done a good metrical translation of David in the history of the English language. No poet could be more formal than he, and none more influential. It's just like it was with the 'Wulf,' but of far greater moment. Just an extraordinary opportunity for a major translator. For three years Dick Wilbur urged me to undertake it, but I am no translator. Thank heavens Alan did it. It's the only thing that kept him alive his last fifteen months, and after he finished he lay down and died. This is a very big deal in two fields, literature and liturgy.

I'm hoping that next week Msgr. Laliberte and I will make a tape for Distinguished Performances. I shall declaim some poems, and he will chant #139 in three tone Gregorian mode. This will give everyone an idea of how we want this work to be used in our churches.

I've been experimenting, Mary, with ad libitum chant for some months. But after hearing Laliberte's light baritone? Go with a pro!
