Bill Coyle's review of Carrie Jerrell & Richard Newman
Here's a link to Bill Coyle's smart review of excellent new books by Carrie Jerrell and Richard Newman. I'm glad to see that word is getting out!

I met Carrie Jerrell five years ago at Sewanee, and even though at that time she had just graduated from the epicenter of formalism, the University of Evansville, you could tell she was the real deal.
Nice person, too. Talent and grace do not always come hand in hand.
I should note that too few people have noticed that the Powow River Poets have two of the very best reviewers around in Bill Coyle and Alfred Nicol.

Yes, this is a great review, and let's notice what Bill says about Richard Newman's Domestic Fugues as well as his praise of Carrie Jerrell. (I did put a note on GA, but hey, more people will see it here.)

Thanks for posting this, Ned. I enjoyed both Newman's book and Jerrell's, and I think Bill does an excellent job of describing what makes the work of each poet distinctive and what they have in common. And it's a treat to see a reviewer quote so generously from the poems under review and talk about them in detail. I'm glad to see CPR is up and running again, and with a snazzy new website.

It's worth noting too, that Gregory Dowling has an article in the issue on Larkin. The whole issue, a special number on criticism, seems to be available free as an introductory enticement--and I admit to being enticed!
