Alfred Nicol has been announced as the winner of the 2005 Newburyport Art Association Poetry Contest, judged this year by Lewis Turco. The contest received a record number of entries - 634 from 40 states, Finland(!) and Canada.

Spherians did very well. In addition to Alfred, Gail White took second place, Susan McLean won First Honorable Mention and another Honorable Mention, Deborah Warren won Third Honorable Mention, and additional Honorable Mention awards went to Jeff Holt, Don Kimball, Mike Juster (two) and Robert Crawford.

All poems awarded prizes and Honorable Mention certificates will be read, whenever possible by their authors, at the Newburyport Art Association's historic Sam Sargent Gallery, 65 Water Street, Newburyport, MA, on Sunday May 15, at 5 p.m. The day's events include a reading of a selection of his own poems and comments on the winners by Lew Turco, a reception with light refreshments, and an opportunity to read the winners and all other entries, which will be on display at the gallery. Visitors are welcome.

Congratulations to Alfred and everybody else!

Thanks, Michael. Given the distinguished competition, it was an honor to make the list at all. It is nice to see a competition in which formalists have a real chance. Rhina is doing formalism a great service by organizing it.

Susan

Yes, thank you, Michael. It's an honor to win, again, this year, with another Honorable Mention. And congratulations
to all the other Eratospherians who won First, Second, Third or Honorable Mentions.

Don
