Tim, this is so thoughtfully poignant. It chokes me up. Congratulations.

Best,

I remember seeing this somewhere before (probably here).
Delighted to find it in such an excellent venue!

Thank you Jean and Gail. I think Cambridge has used this before as his poem of the week, for I know I've seen his comments before. Davey Talbott pointed this out to me this morning.

Everything italicized was actually said by my dad five and six days before his death. Mom called in a panic, because she couldn't understand a word, but it was hunting season, and I wouldn't be much of a poet if I hadn't understood what he was trying to say. Five years later I related these phrases to Alan, and he exploded, "Well, make it mete and rhyme." And that's how the poem came to be. I thank Gerry Cambridge for featuring it once again.

Love the poem and agree with your reviewer who says:

Timothy Murphy is a master of such terse, epigrammatic poems that, like stones holding within them fossils, break open to reveal the unexpected.

Best
Cyn

A very good day with Catholic publishers as Commonweal on the left and First Things on the right took six new poems. Well, let's call my poetry small "C" catholic.
