Default Review of Gail White in Verse Wisconsin

My review of Gail White's The Accidental Cynic:

http://www.versewisconsin.org/Issue1...ews/white.html

Other 'Spherians are in the print issue, including Quincy Lehr and Mary Meriam, but this is the only thing from here I noticed that was available in the online issue.

That's a good clear book review, Susan. Thanks for posting. I also enjoyed the sidebar-sample from Gail's book. There's plenty of subtlety in Gail's wit. And her title is clever, too.

Good review, Susan, really enjoyed it. Someone mentioned Morris Dickstein's essay recently - here's a link to it.

This is a good review, insofar as it not only advocates for a specific work in its own right, but in the greater scheme of things as well.

If I didn't already have it, Susan, you'd have convinced me to buy it. Glad to see the formal versification specificially mentioned.

Quote:
Most modern formalists are content to exploit a limited range of forms:sonnets in great number, some quatrains or couplets, perhaps a villanelle or two. White adds to those forms a dazzling array of clerihews, double dactyls, triolets, skeltonics, a quiz poem, free verse, and six ballades, a form rarely attempted today because of its demanding rhyme scheme, a veritable triathlon for rhymers.

Warm congrats to the delightful, delightfully human, Gail White, and props to Susan McLean for an expert review.
