I've received a scholarship for a residence at the Vermont Studio Center. This was based on a number of poems from The Everyday Uncommon and some newer ones, all original formalist poems. It's exciting as it's been a few years since I've had time exclusively to think and write.

Good news for formalists, too!

Terese

Congratulations on this great opportunity to ski. I mean write. Think and write at the same time? I'd be disqualified .

Craftsbury Common is a beautiful town, you'll love it: it's NYC replicated: NOT.

I've had a number of friends who've gone up there and loved it, so I hope you will.

Congrats,

Bob

So you're actually going to live in Vermont for a while, and write full time? Ooh, I'm insanely jealous! I may have to kill you and steal your identity. (On second thought, I'd have to be able to write like you to pull it off. Nevermind.) Seriously, congrats!

Stephen, Michael, Mike, Bob, Rose

Thank you lots!

Stephen, Are you telling me the snow is going to be a foot deep in Northern Vermont in April? If so, this will be even more of a retreat than I'd hoped.

Michael, it's three and a half weeks in April, apparently in Johnson, VT. You know, that place they call the "Northeast Territory" or something like that. I hear there are grizzlies up there.

Bob, the map doesn't say Craftsbury Common. It says Johnson. I'm so glad you know some people who've been there—could you possibly send more details by email or pm?

Rose, I'd be jealous of myself too, and more so if I didn't have to come up with the balance of the expenses (aside from the scholarship). It will be something else to swing this in terms of work and finances, but don't think I'm complaining. I have some scrambling to do; my friend Stanley brought me back to reality when he asked me "Who's going to cover for you at work?" And other questions of that nature. But the carrot is out there in front of the donkey.

Dear Terese,
Congratulations.

It's the Northeast Kingdom. The area makes an appearance in David Ferry's "The Guest Ellen at the Supper for Street People" -- a poem worth reading, even without the connection.

Best,
Marcia

Terese:
You know you're getting somewhere when other people are willing to invest in your writing. It sounds like a wonderful place to contemplate and write, and no doubt the presence of other writers, including those from the past who are present in spirit, will be an inspiration. Be sure to share some of the results when you return.
