Fellow Spherean and Powow River poet, Alfred Nicol, has two fine poems in the latest (November 2005) issue of Poetry. I hope they pay by the line because one of them is a three-pager!

Well done, Alfred.

Yes, I enjoyed them immensely. And it's six bucks a line!

Alfred, next time we're together, you buy. That's more money than I've made in poetry in my career. Fine poems.

This is a good time to remind everyone that "Winter Light" is available from the University of Evansville Press. It's a fine book.

Here's a link to the little essay I wrote on Nicol's book for the EfH's blog: http://bilge.seablogger.com/archives/003980.php

Dear Alfred:

I tried to be jealous, but I have the feeling of the world's spokes being adjusted. I'm even considering subscribing.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words. Often, publishing a poem feels like putting a note in a bottle and tossing it into the ocean. You're not quite sure anyone's going to read it, and certainly you don't expect a response. So this is a pleasant surpise.

There are other, better reasons to considering subscribing to Poetry, if you don't already. Look for something by Deborah Warren in an upcoming issue, and something by Bill Coyle.

Lemuel's Travels

I am a slender note
rolled in a stoppered flask.
Year after year I float
wherever currents lead me,
and everywhere I ask
"Who in the world will read me?"

Congratulations, Alfred. It is good to see you breaking the Poetry barrier. I'm still not a subscriber, but I do read through the journal occasionally in libraries. Until formal verse stops being merely a token presence in it (and the reviewers of formal verse treat it with more respect), I probably won't subscribe. But I keep an eye on the journal for positive signs. That formal verse is allowed in at all is an improvement.
