I think those who've been having fun lamenting their rejections from Poetry/the Humor Issue oughtta take heart: apparently the editors were not seeking wit, finesse, complexity, or plot, but pure unadulterated smut. Yes, I am horrified, but a girl takes what she can get. My thanks to those who made me believe "What Humans Do" was good for a laugh when I 'shopped it here a few of months ago. It's the shallowest, dirtiest poem I think I've ever written, and I'm finding myself pretty grateful I never did buy that subscription to Poetry for my mother on her birthday.

Also will mention that North of Mist was chosen by the editors back in December to be read on Martha Stewart's radio show (too weird, I know), and is now up on the Poetry audio archives. Please know that is not me reading it...

Thanks to everyone here who's been so supportive of my work
over the years. I'm in an odd phase of writing, trying to get out of my own little painted-in corners, rarely sending things out, and it's really nice to know I can count on ya'll to tell it like it is when I pop in with a poem, serious or otherwise. So thanks for being here.

Having said all that, pls feel free to commence the throwing of tomatoes...

ducking,
wendy v

Wonderful! Congratulations!! I remember it as being very dirty and very funny - but not the specifics - and will just have to wait for Poetry to show us the way.

Hey, great news, wendy! I too am one of the Esteemed Rejected, and verily, the emotional devastation it has caused ranks second only to the night I was 17, caught my first love with a blonde, and lay awake sobbing those deep, rib-wrenching sobs all night long in my bewildered mother's arms.

Apparently he was after pure, unadulterated smut, too

May there be many more of those letters in your future!

Jennifer

Wonderful news Wendy, makes me feel these people actually know something after all.

Well done!

wendy,

*rolls eyes* Thanks for taking away our illusion that they don't want actual good stuff.

But, congratulations anyway, I guess. I really liked the poem, and I'm convinced that my suggestion to change the line to "the stuff [that] we done." is what made it POETRY grade. ;O.)

But, I must reject your characterization of it as "unadulterated smut". I found it to be adultried with no small amount of charm and sweetness.

Also congratulations on the honors for your book. I have tried seveal times to listen to your reading, but my computer won't play those kinds of files anymore. I don't know why - it used to. Guess I turned something off without realizing it.

Anyway, keep rolling, and keep ruling.

Bugsy

Hmmm. I may have to recall that guy I sent out to knee Christian Wyman in the nuts.

Congrats!

I am so proud of you. "There's this girl out in Colorado who has started posting at the Sphere..." and so began our infatuation with Wendy Videlock.
