Just now I visited the First Things page entitled "On the Square" for today and stumbled onto Julie Stoner's piece in sapphic stanzas entitled "Terra Firma." If it was workshopped here, I missed it and so only now have a chance to applaud. A great laugh!

It's not often you see funny poems in Sapphics, but Julia's is a hoot. Take a look, if you haven't already seen it.

Congratulations to Ms. Stoner. The site also carries an infectious poem by retired Spherian Michael Juster.

Here's the link:

The magazine is lucky to have Eratospherians like Mike Juster, Julie Stoner, and Oliver Murray contributing.

Thanks! I especially like the bit in Jody's intro that says "in her spare time, she is a homeschooling mother."
Take notice, all! Poetry is my real job!
(Then again, writing poetry is often an unsatisfying grind, while the homeschooling is fun enough that it feels like a hobby...in fact, we're leaving for the beach right now, to hunt for meteorites with our new neodymium magnet.)

No meteorites in the sand today, but no hypodermic needles, either, so the field trip was a success. Other than the part when I forgot I had the magnet in my pocket as I shimmied between two cars in the parking lot, and I managed to get myself stuck to one of them (with a resounding CLUNK!). The kids dissolved in fits of giggles, while the owner of the car looked decidedly unamused.
Anyway, we came home and pulled the iron out of some breakfast cereal instead. Back to the poetry grind! Thanks again for the kind words.

Congratulations, Julie! And, that's quite an inspired punch line.
Cheers,

Congrats, Julie! Lovely piece!
Yes, Maryann, Julie put this up a couple of months ago, but I can't remember whether anyone had any suggestions for improvement that she went with.
I wish it was easier to summon past threads at times like these.

Julie,
Just had a chance to read your "Terra Firma." Very enjoyable. Reminds me of that famous PJ O'Rourke quote: "Everybody wants to save the world, but no one wants to help mom do the dishes."
