Default Cringeworthy words and sayings

Prepare to cringe.

In an article in today's Washington Post about the Queen's upcoming Jubilee:

"The daughter of George VI, who became king only after his brother abdicated to marry a divorced American socialite, the queen was coronated June 2, 1953."

Reminds me of the days I was in academia and the President of our school would get up and say, "Someone gifted $500,000.00 to our school." As Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes would say, "Another word just got verbed." Verbing weirds language.

It out-Herods Herod, perhaps, as somebody said. Funny how you could 'motor through France' but not 'car through France'. Could AE speakers 'auto through France' or 'automobile through France' ? I wonder why some nouns don't seem verbable.

It's in the OED as a transitive verb, with etymological citations back to 1623. I like it, and will look for ways to conversate it.

I was just trying to stay with the syntax long enough to find out who got coronated.
