I know, it's not a poem, but I want to congratulate Marion on her Letter to the Editor in the March 2007 issue of Poetry. I especially like that "tin ear" comment. (I almost feel sorry for poor Peter Campion - he's really taking a drubbing in the Letters section. Oh, well, too bad. Goes with the territory.

Thanks to a good friend who wants to remain nameless I too now can read Poetry and in this issue I find not only a lively and courageously honest letter from Marion Shore but also a moving and poised sonnet by Nemo and a familiar and splendid poem by Wendy V.
Thank you unnamed friend.
Janet

Although I hadn't thought Campion's review particularly negative--at least I'm not a Muggle!--it was very heartening to read Marion Shore's letter (and a letter by Henry Gould) responding to some of the quibbles. It is refreshing to find someone "gets" the tone of "The Village in the Lake", as this is the second reviewer who has taken issue with the swish/fish rhyme. I had tried to signal the archness a little with the title, which is meant to be a sort of ungainly nod to Poe's "The City in the Sea", but I think that is lost on pretty much everybody (my fault). Anyway, I am encouraged. Many thanks.

I'm glad you all enjoyed my letter. I want to add that it was not as dry and academic as they made it seem -- they cut it by more than half, and took out most of the juicy stuff. For instance, I took the opportunity, with great pleasure, to remark that there are Muggles in all fields -- including criticism -- as Campion's letter so clearly demonstrates! (I also had a postscript that said: as long as we're nitpicking, shouldn't "muggles" be capitalized?") Heh heh.

I've been trying to get into Poetry for years -- I never thought it would happen this way!

It was a kick-ass letter Marion. Good for you! I bet Poetry reads your next submission more carefully.

I loved your letter, Marion! Bravo! And the poetry was better than usual -- due in no small part -- well, primarily -- to Nemo and Wendy. In fact, I thought it was the best issue I've seen for months.

Toni

PS: Thanks for sharing some of the juicier parts that we missed.

I was also really glad to read your insightful letter, Marion, as I'd had a lot of problems with Campion's review. Good job.

(Nemo's and Wendy's poems were lovely too! A real pleasure)
