The Tanka Journal is the magazine of the Japan Tanka Poets' Society. Congrats to Fr Rob Pecotte who has a sequence of five tanka in the latest edition.

Congratulations Robert. I have read some of them and was enchanted. They have a wonderful feeling for nature. Highly deserved.

David,

Thank you for posting this and thereby giving me notice that the Journal is out! I have been so busy lately (literally, I think I have been busier than I have ever been in my life!) that I haven’t had a chance to subscribe to the Journal! It was David who got me intouch with an editor from the Journal and passed along the sequence to him, so I owe David a big thank you for the publication and polishing of the sequence. (Note: any and all deficiencies in said sequence are entirely the fault of the author. Therefore, any and all complaints, verbal abuse and general rudeness should be directed toward and heaped upon said author and not David Anthony who is innocent of any and all poor writing (side note: this cannot actually be verified, but we presume it to be true until it can be definitely proven otherwise in a court of his peers.)

Janet and Catherine,

Thank you for your congratulations and Janet for your warm recommendation for the sequence. I don’t know if I sent any of the ones that I submitted to the Journal via David or if I posted them here for critique! Another problem with being too darn busy, I can’t remember much of anything other than to check my calendar to see what’s next.

Question: Would it be amiss to post the sequence here, (not for critique) in this format, as most Spherians are probably not member’s of nor subscribers to the Japanese Tanka Society or the Tanka Journal?

Blessings,

Fr. RP

PS: I’m still is having difficulty with the icons and login section of the site…as we Dakotan’s say (ok, so its Norwegian, but heck there are a lot of them around here!): UFDA!

Congratulations, Fr. RP! I'd love to read your tanka. If you don't post them here, would you PM them to me please? (when you're not too busy)
Mary

Ok. I am basing this post on the fact that I have had two requests and no “don't even think about it posts or pms.”

Far from home

The smell of beer
as sweat stings my eyes—
under the sun
my shadow lengthens…
how far I am from then.

The main course
crab-stuffed lobster…
on Good Friday;
laughter fills the dining room
emptiness my heart.

A swirl of wind
as the rattle of autumn
falls silent…
The one whom I longed to be
lies buried in the snow.

The eagle plummets
down the cliff’s face;
a path winds…
back and forth in my heart
between what is and could be.

A quiet pond
reflects my smile back to me…
-thank you-
across the park a toddler
reaches for a dandelion.

PS: Thank you David L for the congrats (now don't take em back after you read the sequence!)

Thanks for posting your tanka, Fr. RP. I especially like

reaches for a dandelion.
