For the season, Stephen Scaer's Pumpkin Hurling is online this morning at the First Things website:

Every Columbus Day
the locals bring their chairs
and watch a trebuchet
launch pumpkins past a fort
of tin, as engineers
at play attempt to crush
the record for the sport
of hurling giant squash. . . .

You all know about this hobby of New Hampshirites and others with way too much time on their hands, yes?

JB

Yay, Stephen, The Master of Cucurbita, Poet Laureate of large squash everywhere. I enjoyed this when it was workshopped, and it is a delight to see it again - and in such excellent company. Congrats!

Stephen

Autmumnal blessings on you for introducing me to the word "trebuchet" in a fine piece worthy of FT.

Thanks! It's a pleasure to hit the square.
