His friends and admirers here will be glad to hear that Bob Mezey who forged his way by literary and pedagogical accomplishment to the rank of full professor, poet in residence, and professor emeritus at Pomona College with naught but a BA to his name is to recieve an honorary doctorate from his first school, Kenyon College, on the 8th of April. He studied there with John Crowe Ransom, among other distinguished faculty.
In his case the honorary degree is so richly deserved that I think Bob should allow us to call him Dr. Mezey. After all, we still refer to Dr. Samuel Johnson, whose title was also honorary.

Heartfelt congratulations for a richly deserved honor - every Spherian ought to own his Collected Poems.

Dr. Mezey may not come in to take his bow until he has the sheepskin in hand. Meanwhile, for those who don't know his story, there are several biographical articles online. I like the one about how his dismissal from a Fresno State teaching position led to faculty protests and student riots.

His and Stephen Berg's Naked Poetry: Recent American Poetry in Open Forms (1969) was the favorite poetry anthology of me and my writer friends during our college years--and it still seems as fresh and exciting to me now as it did then.

Thanks for the many kind comments. The event in Gambier was quite something---I'm not used to that sort of treatment. But I always knew that I would somehow be able to put to use my 6 or 7 years of Latin.
